Introduction
This Privacy Policy explains how Streaming Word Filter ("we," "our," "the extension") handles user data. Streaming Word Filter is a Chrome extension that filters specific user-chosen words during playback on supported streaming platforms by temporarily muting audio and applying a visual overlay when those words appear in captions or subtitles.
Information Collection and Use
Streaming Word Filter does not collect, transmit, sell, or share any personal information. The extension operates entirely within your browser. No data is sent to the developer, to any server, or to any third party. There are no analytics, no tracking, no accounts, and no telemetry of any kind.
What Is Stored Locally
The following information is stored locally on your device using Chrome's built-in extension storage:
- The list of words you have chosen to filter
- Your filter preferences (mute duration, overlay colour, overlay opacity, enabled/disabled state, caption notification preference)
- Aggregate usage statistics stored only on your device (total words filtered, total filters applied), used to display activity counts to you in the extension popup
This data is stored only on your device and is never transmitted to us or any third party. It is used solely to provide the filtering functionality you have configured. If you have Chrome Sync enabled in your Google account, Chrome may sync your extension preferences across your own devices as part of its standard browser sync — this is handled entirely by Chrome and not by the extension.
Permissions
The extension requires the following permissions, each used only for the functionality described:
- storage — to save your filter word list, preferences, and local usage statistics on your device
- tabs — to detect when you navigate to a supported streaming site and to communicate between the extension popup and the active tab
- scripting — to inject the filtering content script into supported streaming pages so it can read captions and apply muting
- contextMenus — to provide a right-click "Add word to filter list" option when you select text
- notifications — to inform you when captions are disabled on a streaming service (since filtering requires captions to work), when captions have been auto-enabled, or when auto-enabling has failed
- alarms — to schedule periodic local backups of your usage statistics so they persist across browser sessions
- host permissions — limited to the specific streaming services the extension supports (Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video and its regional domains, Hulu, HBO Max / Max, YouTube, Peacock, Paramount+, Showmax, and others listed in the extension manifest). The extension does not access any other websites.
Data Security
Because all extension data stays on your device and is never transmitted anywhere, there is no server-side data store that could be breached, leaked, or subpoenaed on our end. Your filter list, preferences, and statistics remain entirely under your control.
Third-Party Links
The extension's "About" page contains optional links to Patreon and PayPal for users who wish to support development and the extension's donation-supported food programme initiative. If you choose to follow these links, you will be taken to those third-party services, which have their own privacy policies and data practices that are not covered by this policy.
Children's Privacy
The extension does not knowingly collect personal information from children or from any user, regardless of age. All functionality operates locally on the user's device and no data leaves that device.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The current version will always be available at this URL, which is linked from the extension's Chrome Web Store page. You are encouraged to review this policy periodically.
